The Art of Walking
Now some of you are probably thinking, "The art of walking? What do you mean?" I can tell you now guys and gals that walking can be a very powerful tool when it comes to thinking something through or making a big decision whether that's to do with work, family or yourself.
I personally find it a release and gives me that additional space I need to really connect with whatever I'm trying to do in my life at that point. There is two ways on how this works for me. The first is the fact that there is no distractions around. There are plenty of distractions in this world and especially at home where you spend the most time thinking about big decisions. Walking and being constantly on the move allows me to think distraction free allowing my thoughts to flow freely. I feel that because your thoughts can flow freely you are able to connect your thoughts to emotion a lot easier and quicker meaning you come out of that situation better, quicker and happier. On a side note, I always walk late evening when there isn't much traffic or people around so I don't have to worry about the outdoor hazards as much. The second way it works for me is when I'm walking I am always listening to music. Listening to music for me is a catalyst in my thought process. It emphasises that emotional response I get when analysing a thought or decision and that gives you the real indication on how you feel towards that thought. It again allows you to be better off when you finish thinking about it.
More on the music side as well. Like I said, it always emphasises your emotions and mood. You don't need to be thinking about a big decision or thought to go out walking. There are times I just go out because I just fancy emphasising my mood. When I am in a good mood I go for a walk and listen to upbeat tunes, putting a smile on my face and making me feel on top of the world. Its the same effect that causes you to work harder to a workout class or the gym as you are more than likely listening to motivating music which adds to your drive. Music is a powerful tool and add that to walking and you got a yourself a killer thought process which will benefit you anything you are trying to accomplish.
Examples from me personally include the recent decision to go on a year long working holiday in New Zealand. Obviously its a huge decision as I had a potential career job and friends/family here. I went walking like I normally do with my music in and starting weighing up the pros and cons. I started to decide how I felt about my job and my social life to see if my decision was something good for me to undertake or not. Took a few weeks and a lot of walks but I came to the overall consensus and with everything considered, I was best off discovering myself a bit more down under.
Without my walks I wouldn't be the same man I am now. I would be more stressed, anxious and nervous about everything I do. Walking allows me to be free from everyone and everything. Allows me to concentrate solely on me and that's the way all of us should think. You need to be happy about what you do in life. If other people are not happy about something that makes you happy then cut them out. You don't need someone dragging you down and making you doubt yourself.
That's another thing guys...Doubt. This is where walking benefits me the most. Above I told you that it emphasises my feelings and my thoughts in which they are good AND bad. If I didn't have those feelings I wouldn't be able to pin point how I truly feel about it and without it would shroud me doubt. I don't want to make every decision with the feeling of doubt, constantly thinking maybe it wasn't the right decision or thought. Figure it out 100% first THEN walk the path. You will be 100% more happy with it. I would recommend anyone to give it a go if they are struggling with a dilemma, issue or even if they want to amplify their great mood! Has nothing but benefits. It has made my life simpler for me and I'm happy with the path I'm on now!
p.s. I know some people don't need to do this and are very good at analysing themselves and their feelings in which I'm jealous but this is purely an aid which I found always helps me so always do it!
